Interested in Volunteering?
Why Volunteer
Volunteers represent civil society and contribute in
nation building. Thus, they influence public opinion, for which greater
mobilization of people is required.
Volunteers are a valuable reserve of varied resources.
Thus, what Praajak intends to do is to tap into these resources which will
help in building a group of people who will work for the cause of children
and child rights. Through time, individual volunteer efforts accumulate
into a broader network of active citizens who are concerned with child rights,
and can advocate for greater social awareness on the needs of
under-privileged children.
Praajak has been working with volunteers since
December 2003. At present, there are 25 active volunteers directly
interacting with children in Kolkata. In addition, in field locations such
as Karagpur and Asansol, and other parts of West Bengal, Praajak works with
another 25 volunteers of all ages.
In Kolkata, volunteers make regular visits to
institutional homes located in the suburbs. At the homes, they teach
lessons to the children e.g. on hygiene and life skills such as
clothes-mending. Volunteers conduct a range of activities with these
children, including story-telling and performing skits, playing games and
arts and crafts. More importantly, volunteers provide care to these
children and attention that they would otherwise not receive. Even when not at the centers, volunteers
and children continue to keep in touch through postcards. Through our
volunteers, the children also receive clothing, medicine, stationery, books
and games.
